Club leader Colin Payne gives the low-down on what's been happening at Horncastle Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School.
As part of our after school science and engineering club we have based projects and investigations around the Greenpower Challenge. This is for students to design and build an electric-powered vehicle to travel the greatest distance in four hours. Students have undertaken many investigations on topics such as aerodynamics, material manipulation, electrical circuits, current consumption, short circuiting, structures and friction.
To give the project extra depth, we have invited in experts from the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining to give lectures on related topics. An aerodynamics engineer working with a Formula One team has given advice to the club members, whilst engineers specialising in bodywork have advised on improving aerodynamics.
The students are currently working on their Silver CREST Award with testing of the vehicle taking place in June and July 2008.
