Ideas and case studies
If the children use a wooden slope to test the shoes, they could try polishing it (like the caretaker in the story) to see whether that makes any difference to the slipperyness of the surface.
As an alternative, the children could carefully coat sugar paper using wax crayons to see whether that makes the paper surface more slidey.
