The fast track
A Eurostar train recently broke the UK rail speed record by travelling at 208 miles per hour. The fastest passenger train running in the UK has previously been the Inter City 225 – which takes its name from its top speed of 225 kilometres per hour (about 140 miles per hour). But if trains are getting faster and faster, how come they always seem to be late?

Have you ever wondered how the Eurostar locomotive was developed?

You might like to …

• compare the designs of the locomotive of a British Intercity, a Eurostar and a Japanese bullet train.
• find out why is there a difference in speed between these three types of train; research methods for measuring these speeds
• find out how a magnetic train is able to travel faster than one using tracks; devise your own magnetic railway
• compare trains to see which type is the most energy efficient; create your own list of criteria for judging their environmental impact.
