Up, up and away!
A new “super-jumbo” is due to enter service in Spring 2006. The first fully double-decked aircraft, Airbus’s A380, will seat 555 people – 155 more than current jumbos. It will also house a lounge, a bar, showers and a gymnasium! Rolls Royce is making the massively powerful engines; the first one was recently delivered to France. It’s been specially adapted for use on a different aeroplane so it can be flight tested.

Have you ever wondered why aeroplane propellers are designed the way they are?

You might like to …

• test different propeller designs/number of blades to see which gives most power/turns quickest etc.
• look at microlight engines: what the effects are of having the engine at the back of the aircraft
• investigate the differences between propeller engines and jet engines
• devise a way to see how much air a fan can move (you could use the fan from an old heater or computer).
