Safe landings!
Retired pilot, Herb Tanner, is the oldest man ever to have performed a solo skydive. The Ohio-born American was a staggering 92 years old when he jumped from a single-engined plane above Cleveland on June 19 1998. His life-long ambition was to attempt a jump, but he was discouraged by his wife. She died two years before he finally did it.
In 2003, a great grandfather from North Yorkshire celebrated his 90th birthday with a tandem parachute jump. Bert Moss jumped for charity after having both legs amputated because of diabetes-related problems.

Have you ever wondered how parachutes work?

You might like to …

• investigate the history of parachutes and compare the advantages and disadvantages of traditional and modern parachutes
• find out about the design and scientific principles needed to design and manufacture a parachute
• design and make a number of model parachutes and devise a testing system to make sure each one’s tested in the same way (a fair test)
• make modifications to your designs after studying your results; you could prepare a presentation to explain your findings to other students.
