Snorkel science
Although scuba diving is increasing in popularity, it remains quite exclusive – it’s not cheap to learn, and it’s certainly not cheap to buy all the kit. That’s why a lot of people take dive courses abroad in cheaper countries (and countries where the waters are nice and warm!). Fortunately, there is an inexpensive and accessible alternative to scuba diving: snorkelling. You get to explore the oceans with ease – but it does have a major downfall: you can’t go too deep.
Have you ever wondered why divers don’t just use longer snorkels to dive deeper?
You might like to …
• investigate the affects of pressure on the lungs when under water; design and carry out some experiments to demonstrate the effects
• find out how people dive deeper than, say, 25 metres
• find out how pressure is kept constant in a submarine.
