Bit of a stud
Have you ever played football and ended up with really sore feet because the studs on your footy boots have been pressing against your soles? Well, that could all be about to change. A company in Cambridge has designed a pair of football boots with ‘springy’ studs that work a bit like a car’s suspension system. They have flexible plates that absorb energy and reduce the pressure on your feet.
Have you ever wondered why studs on football boots are arranged the way they are?
You might like to …
• find out why studs are arranged the way they are; think about pressure points
• design some tests on different stud arrangements and types (for example, moulded and blades); see which give the best grip on different surfaces, or which put more pressure on the wearer’s feet
• find out what studs are made from; design and carry out some tests to see if other materials would be suitable
• design (and make) the ultimate studs; you’ll have to think about things like: their arrangement; how they’re going to be fixed to the sole of the boot (whether they’re moulded or screw-in, for example); what they’re made from.
