Snow joke
Ski crazes over the years have included the monoski, snow funboards (a snow equivalent of windsurfers), snow scooters (a BMX crossed with a snowboard) and paraskiing. Each offers a new experience to thrill-seeking snow lovers. Skiing clothes and accessories are also developing; puffy ski jackets being replaced with contoured body hugging ones.

Have you ever wondered how fast snowboarders and skiers go? And how they can go faster?

You might like to …

• find out about ski and snowboard design; find out which ones are designed to go faster, and which ones are supposed to give better control (which ones should a beginner use, for example)
• design and carry out some tests to see which type of ski/snowboard is fastest (look at length, width and shape); find out which gives you better control (turning etc.)
• find out how friction is reduced on skis/snowboards
• investigate the different forms of clothing worn by skiers and snowboarders; find out about state-of-the art ski wear with ‘thermoregulation’ (such as Outlast) and conduct tests to see if it works and if it’s better than cheaper alternatives
• find out about goggles and ski boots and other equipment; find out what materials are used and what properties they have; carry out materials tests
• investigate how ski boots are adjusted to match the misalignment of people’s legs; research and analyse data to find out how legs are misaligned in different groups of people; have a look at: http://www.suppleworx.co.uk/flex_improve_body_align.htm.
