Indigestion
Soluble pain killers
Lots of people suffer from indigestion and heartburn. The unpleasant feeling happens because the body sometimes produces more acid than it’s supposed to when we eat. Both the type of food, and the speed at which you eat, affect this.

Have you ever wondered how indigestion remedies stop that feeling of heartburn?

You might like to …

  • Find out what products can be bought as indigestion remedies or antacids. Look to see what the active ingredients are, and decide why you think the other ingredients have been added. You could also find out why the initials BP or Ph Eur are found after some of the names of ingredients
  • Starting with magnesium sulfate, devise ways of making some magnesium carbonate and Milk Of Magnesia™
  • Devise methods to check if a range of antacids (for example, magnesium carbonate and Milk Of Magnesia™) contain the amounts stated on the labels
  • Devise a procedure to find out how effective antacids are. You could work out how much acid they neutralize and how long it takes. For antacids that give off a gas, you could measure the volume of gas given off when the recommended dose is taken.
