Kitchen germs
Two years ago health officials carried out surprise checks on ten restaurants in Birmingham, London and Cambridge - half of them failed the inspection. The inspectors found, among other things, a mouse scurrying across a kitchen floor in Birmingham, rat droppings and mouldy vegetables in London, and out-of-date raw burgers dripping their juices onto salad in Cambridge. No wonder four-and-a-half million people suffer from food poisoning in the UK each year!
Have you ever wondered how dirty your kitchen is?
You might like to …
Place agar plates in different parts of your kitchen and leave them uncovered for a couple of days. Seal them and see what grows
Take swabs in different parts of the kitchen and culture any micro-organisms. You could try to subculture some of the micro-organisms to try to identify the germs.
