Keeping cool
Comedian and writer Tony Hawks once hitch-hiked around Ireland with a fridge. His friend didn’t believe it was possible so one evening down the pub, a £100 bet was made to prove him wrong. More recently, an ex-marine decided to climb mount Snowdon with a fridge strapped to his back. Most of us have more sense, and use our fridges simply to keep food cold!
Have you ever wondered how refrigeration affects our food?
You might like to …
Investigate the affect of temperature on food storage. You could take samples of the same food – cheese, for example – and keep them at different temperatures (perhaps keep one in the freezer, one in the fridge and one at room temperature), then observe the differences
You could inoculate foodstuffs with known fungi and see which ones grow quicker at certain temperatures
Try to find out the best temperatures for storing different foods – and perhaps design the ultimate fridge with different compartments for different foodstuffs.
