Toothbrush design
Toothbrush
A Glasgow dentist has been awarded £75,000 to develop a new toothbrush handle that increases control and cuts joint strain. The dentist, 50-year-old Glenn Heavenor, said: “When I sanded that first design in the bathroom it was like giving birth to a toothbrush.” How he knows what it’s like to give birth to a toothbrush, we’ll never know.

Have you ever wondered if the brush you use affects the cleanliness of your teeth? Are electric brushes better?

You might like to …

  • Stain some teeth (if you can’t get any teeth, egg shells can be used instead – they have similarly high calcium content) with some form of dye. Clean them with different types of tooth brush to see which is best
  • Try to work out if certain types of brush work better on certain types of stain
  • Find out what toothbrush bristles are made from. Devise a test to work out how long they remain useful (in other words, how long until they lose their cleaning power).
