Stain removal
Toothpaste
Health Which? Magazine recently revealed that people aiming for whiter-than-white teeth were left disappointed, as many whitening toothpastes fail to live up to their name. There are a number of reasons why teeth become discoloured. Surface stains (extrinsic) can be caused by tea, coffee or smoking, while the actual tooth colour (intrinsic stains) can be affected by a person’s health.

Have you ever wondered if some toothpastes are better than others?

You might like to …

  • Look at various brands of toothpaste and compare their active ingredients. Decide which you think offers the best value for money
  • Stain some teeth (if you can’t get any teeth, egg shells can be used instead – they have similarly high calcium content) with some form of dye. Clean them with different types of toothpaste to see which is best
  • Try to work out if certain types of toothpaste work better on certain types of stain. For example, some toothpastes claim to be specially made for smokers (nicotine stains).
