Home-made toothpaste
Toothpaste
Various toothpastes claim to do various things. Paramount – obviously – is their ability to clean teeth. But some also say they freshen breath, or remove particular stains. They come in different colours and flavours, and in different dispensers. And considering most people clean their teeth twice a day, our nation must spend an awful lot of money on toothpaste.

Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to make your own toothpaste? And would it be as good as shop-bought stuff?

You might like to …

  • Find a recipe to make your own toothpaste (you can find numerous recipes in books or on the internet)
  • Experiment with the different quantities and ways of mixing etc. and turn the recipe into a standard procedure for making toothpaste
  • Devise some test methods to check if toothpaste made using your standard procedure is adequate
  • Compare your own toothpaste with shop-bought toothpastes
  • Design packaging for your toothpaste. You’d have to think about what materials to make it from, and how easy it would be to mass produce
  • Find out how much toothpaste dentists recommend you use. Compare different ways of dispensing toothpaste (tubes and pumps). See how much toothpaste is dispensed.
