Vitamins and minerals
Fairy cakes
Trying to achieve a balanced diet can seem like a daunting prospect. You’ve got to think about food groups and calories, fibre and carbohydrates. Then there are all your essential minerals and vitamins and antioxidants, meats and dairy, sugars and fats. Is it better to have a low fat, high carb diet, or a high fat, low carb one? However daunting, it’s important we get it right; a bad diet is potentially dangerous.

Have you ever wondered how many vitamins and minerals are needed daily for a healthy, balanced diet?

You might like to …

  • Find out what food products provide the vitamins and minerals essential for health
  • Find out what information is usually provided on the labels of food products
  • Find out how much is needed daily, and how it varies with a person’s age and sex. You could also find out which products can supplement a person’s normal intake
  • Using the information you found in the previous pointers, try to develop a ‘smoothie’ that tastes good and provides you with your recommended daily doses of vitamins and minerals (but try not to simply grind up a bunch of vitamin tablets!).
