Drinking milk
There are more than two-million cows in Great Britain, producing more than 10 billion pints of milk each year. And that’s a good thing, because milk is the number-one calcium provider in the British diet. Calcium is an essential mineral we need from cradle to grave; it’s particularly good at helping prevent osteoporosis. Osteoporosis results in a weakening of the bone, making it more prone to fractures.
Have you ever wondered where else we can get calcium in our diet?
You might like to …
Investigate which sources – other than milk – provide us with calcium
Collect a variety of milk samples to test them for their calcium content (for example, using an EDTA titrate, flame photometry or potentiometric titration). List the different types of milk in order of calcium content
Try similar investigations looking for other minerals in other foodstuffs (for example, iron in breakfast cereals by colorimetry or atomic absorption spectroscopy).
