Counting calories
Woman on scales
It’s been estimated that three-million Britons are on the controversial, celebrity-endorsed Atkins diet. The diet – adopted by stars such as Jennifer Aniston and Geri Halliwell – has even been blamed for a slump in pasta and potato sales, two of the diet’s off-limits foods. And it’s not the only diet people seem obsessed with; for years weight-conscious men and women have tirelessly counted calories in an effort to shed a pound or two.

Have you ever wondered how you can work out the amount of calories in different foodstuffs?

You might like to …

  • Find out what a ‘calorie’ is, and how it’s related to carbohydrates
  • See what information about calories and carbohydrates is given on different food packaging
  • Develop a method of working out the calorific content of foodstuffs (for example, by burning them and determining how much heat is produced).
