Avoiding scurvy
Limes
Have you ever heard Americans refer to us Brits as ‘Limeys’? The expression comes from the fact that British sailors used to suck limes to prevent scurvy. Sounds a little sour? Maybe, but scurvy is definitely something to be avoided… it’s one of the oldest nutritional disorders, caused by a lack of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Among its more unpleasant symptoms are bleeding gums, loose teeth and internal bleeding.

Vitamin C is sensitive to conditions such as heat. Did you know that cooking foods can sometimes make them lose their vitamin C?
