Keeping it warm
Pizza
If you ever order a pizza for delivery you expect it to be piping hot when it arrives. But sometimes the delivery boy has to ride his moped for a fair few miles, through the traffic, to reach his destination. During that time the pizza’s bound to cool down a bit. That’s why pizza packaging tends to be made from some sort of insulating material; usually corrugated cardboard.

Have you ever wondered how long packaging keeps your pizza warm?

You might like to …

  • Do some research into pizza boxes and other fast-food packaging. Find out what materials are used, and why (this may include research into thermal properties of materials)
  • Compare the thermal resistance of various materials used in food packaging; things that keep food warm, and things that keep food cold
  • Find out how Thermos flasks keep liquid hot or cold
  • Think about the other essential properties of packaging (for example, strength) and design methods to test these properties
  • Design and/or make a fast-food box and a carrier for a delivery boy’s moped.
