Caffeine
Lots of fizzy drinks contain caffeine. Some of them also have caffeine-free versions. There are also a number of soft drinks that have extra caffeine, and are designed to help people stay awake and alert. One particular famous brand claims to, “improve endurance, alertness, concentration and reaction speed". In short: it "vitalizes body and mind”.
Have you ever wondered how much caffeine affects people in body and mind?
You might like to …
Research how much caffeine there is in different types of caffeine-containing drinks. Compare a range of fizzy drinks products, for example cola or energy drinks with tea and coffee. You could also compare their caffeine contents with caffeine-containing foods, such as chocolate, or medicines
Investigate the effect of caffeine on physical and mental responses. You could do this by performing a mental or physical activity, then cutting caffeine from your diet for a week. After a week repeat the activity. Then drink a caffeinated drink at three or four intervals during the day, performing the activity again after each drink
Look at how caffeinated drinks cause 'diuresis' (increased urine production). Measure the changes in the volume of urine output after drinking increased amounts of caffeinated drinks
Compare the effect of caffeine and other antibiotics on bacterial or plant growth. See how varying the concentration of caffeine inhibits growth.
