The heat of the sun
During the summer months we often get warned about the dangers of staying out in the sun. Sometimes the weather forecast tells us how long it’s safe to do so. You may have heard of the ‘sun index’. This is a number from one to ten given by weather forecasters. If you know the sun index you can work out how long it’s safe to stay in the sun.
Have you ever wondered why weather forecasts tell us how long we should stay in the sun? Do you know what factors affect the strength of the sun’s rays?

Investigate the differences in UV radiation on a cloudy day and a clear day, or on a windy day and a still day.
