Hair dyes
Coloured Hair
About a year ago Tony Blair was reported to be dyeing his hair with blond highlights (a spokesman for the PM denied it). Another politician, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, actually threatened legal action against anyone who claims he dyes his hair (he doesn’t, of course!). But hair-dyeing isn’t just for oldies trying to hide their grey. Hair-dyeing is a very popular pastime.

Have you ever wondered how effective hair dyes are, or what damage they may do to your hair?

You might like to …

  • Dye some hair samples with different types of dye (perhaps permanent dye and ‘wash out’ non-permanent dye). Test the samples to see how they withstand being washed with shampoos, or if the dye affects other treatments (for example, see if perming lotion works as well on dyed hair)
  • Carry out tests to see if dyeing hair affects its strength, appearance (apart from its colour!) or other properties. Test to see if it makes a difference how many times the hair has been dyed, or whether different dyes affect hair in different ways.
