Shoe design
Shoes
The main reason we wear things on our feet is to keep them warm and protect them from being damaged. They come in many shapes and sizes – shoes, trainers, boots, sandals and flip-flops to name but a few. There are also numerous specialist types of footwear – football boots, running spikes, hiking boots, ballet shoes; the list goes on. Some of them have clear features which make them different, while others are very similar.

Have you ever wondered why there are so many types of shoes for so many different activities? What’s the difference?

You might like to …

  • Test the grip of different shoes on different surfaces. Explain why different levels of ‘grip’ are important on different types of shoe
  • Test the water resistance and insulation of different types of shoe. You could also test to see how well ‘summer’ shoes manage to keep your feet cool
  • Design a pair of ‘multi-function’ shoes that can be used for more than one specialist activity.
