Pamela Anderson had her "Tommy" tattoo altered to "Mommy" after she divorced rock star Tommy Lee, and Johnny Depp changed "Winona Forever" to read "Wino Forever" when he split up with the actress Winona Ryder. Despite people wanting to change – or get rid of – their tattoos, more and more people are still deciding to brave the needle. But why not go for something less permanent?

Test different types of temporary tattoos – transfers or henna pens, for example – to see how long they last. If you use henna, make sure it does not contain the chemical para-phenylene diamine (PPD), which can lead to severe allergic reactions
Carry out tests to see if temporary tattoos are waterproof
Carry out tests to see if temporary tattoos can withstand soaps and other cleaning products
Carry out tests to see if henna is a longer-lasting ink than an average biro or felt-tip pen.
