Wave energy
A strange contraption with an 11 metre long blade has emerged off the coast in Devon. The turbine uses energy from the tides to generate enough power to keep about 200 homes in electricity. It’s fish-friendly too, as its blade turns slowly enough to allow them to swim through unharmed. The first of its kind, many more are due to follow, as scientists reckon enough energy can be generated from the sea to cover the whole of the UK’s electricity needs.
75% of the Earth is covered by seawater. Have you ever wondered how we use it to generate power?
You might like to …

investigate why there are different designs of wave turbine for shallow and deep water
design and make a wave energy collector.
