Have you ever stood on the side of a dance floor and watched the dancers moving around? Do they tend to move in set ways or is their motion random? What is random motion? How is the motion of dancers affected by the type of music – does faster tempo music produce more random movement? Random motion can be set up and studied by observing pollen grains on the surface of water, or smoke particles in a ‘smoke cell’.
Have you ever wondered what random motion is?
You might like to …
investigate the motion of pollen (such as lycopodium powder) on the surface of water
carry out tests to see what happens when the water temperature changes
investigate the motion of smoke particles in a smoke cell; you’ll need a microscope to see the moving smoke particles, or they could be filmed using a digital microscope or viewer.
