Example Bronze Award projects
User Friendly Car Park project

The example projects below were successful at CREST Regional Fairs and the CREST National Fair 2007. Click here for information about 2008's event.

MP3 Players: What are you getting?
Anita McGargan, Brian Walters and Conor Breen - St Patrick's High School, Keady, Co. Armagh, Ireland.

The aim of the project was to discover if students in KS3 classes were at risk of permanently damaging their hearing due to listening to their MP3 players at unsafe levels. Cross infection risk by sharing headphones was looked at also. Research states that 85dB is the threshold for permanently damaging hearing. A random sample of students was chosen. Normal listening levels were recorded using sound sensing equipment. 61% were found to be listening at 85 dB or above and many more were close to this.

Does Shape Affect Speed?
Ruari Jardine - Dollar Academy, Clackmannshire

This project was inspired by the flight of an owl, three experiments tested the effect of shape upon speed of travel. One showed that a tear shaped lump of plasticine sank quicker than other shapes in water; another demonstrated that a pointed boat travelled faster than others across water; a third showed that a large parachute floated slower than a smaller one. This project showed that shape really does affect speed and various applications were explored.

A Clown Costume for a Year 4 Student
Hannah Sheppard - Kent College, Pembury, Tunbridge Wells

In preparation for GCSEs, a textile project brief stated a clown costume for a younger student must be made, using different techniques to apply bright colours.  The project was to be created from a basic block pattern.  An interview with the client ensured their preferred patterns and colours were applied to the costume. Techniques used include tie-dye, batik, colour transfer crayons, fabric pens and fabric paint. This garment was worn in a dance production.

User Friendly Car Park
Tom Harlow, Eddie Paris and Alex Price – John Port School, Etwall

A task was set by Toyota to design a car park to be built at the Burnaston site. The Car Park was to be used by employees and visitors and was designed to save time looking for a space. After generating ideas, testing and model making, we finally produced a scaled model of the final car park. The car park is divided into spaces which have an illuminated signal if they are free or occupied.
