Overall winner 2005
Overall winner 2005 Nicola McLoughlin
In 2005, Nicola McLoughlin from the University of Oxford was voted the overall winner of the perspectives competition, with her poster Life beyond Earth (pdf 300KB).

Since then Nicola has completed her PhD and, in mid September 2006, started postdoctoral work at the University of Bergen, Norway.  Being involved in perspectives has helped Nicola to present her work in a clear and persuasive manner, whether it be writing grants & book chapters or helping colleagues present their science in news articles.  Despite being busy finishing her PhD and moving country, Nicola's still had time to keep her hand in with science communication:

  • writing two parliamentary briefings designed for a non-specialist audience whilst on a 3 month placement in the Environment and Rural Affairs Team at the Scottish Parliament Information Centre

Soil Protection in Scotland (pdf 843KB)

Geothermal Heat in Scotland (pdf 296KB)

  • leading group discussions on bird flu, its representation in the media and the ethics of vaccines and prevention policies at a 6th Form A-level Biology Day at the Oxford University Museum of Natural History
  • giving a talk on Science at University to 6th formers at William Howard Comprehensive in Brampton, Cumbria
Nicola is presently preparing an article for an earth science teachers' magazine.  She is only sorry that her basic level of Norwegian means that opportunities to engage with the general public in Bergen will be limited!
