East Midlands Working Lunch
As part of the East Midlands iFestival, the BA organised a Working Lunch on the subject communicating science: for love or profit?

Date: Friday 11 May

Venue: AstraZeneca R&D Charnwood, Bakewell Road, Loughborough

The motives driving science communication are many and varied.  Many do it purely for the love of science.  Others are also motivated by the need to make a living, by the desire to influence the future of society, by the hope of recruiting more young people into the science-related jobs.

This BA Working Lunch addressed the issues of how the market for science communicators works now and whether there is any scope for improvement.  In particular it focused on science communication with young people.  All areas of science communication including maths, engineering and technology were included.

The lunch addressed the following issues:

  • What are communicators' motives?
  • Does the market work?
  • Who are the customers within schools?
  • What are their wants and needs?
  • Is there any quality control?
Speakers included:

  • David Bray, Head of Science, Wreake Valley College
  • Audrey Matthews, de Montfort University
  • Geoff Parsons, Director, By Design Group Ltd
  • David Lathbury, Director of Process Chemistry, AstraZeneca R&D
  • David Wallace, Chairman of Innovation East Midlands

This event was generously supported by AstraZeneca.
