Young innovators win awards
Over 150 students aged between 11 and 19 from the Ireland and Northern Ireland have been showcasing their science and engineering projects at the annual Seagate Young Innovators event in Belfast.
The event took place at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast on Thursday 23 June 2005. The event, organised by Sentinus, is the largest of its kind in Northern Ireland and this year it attracted more students than ever before to battle it out for a host of prestigious prizes. Their work ranged from studying the formation of galaxies to investigating the impact of cleaning agents on asthmatics.
Katherine Donnelly form Loreto College, Coleraine, was awarded the Northern Ireland Young Scientist Overall Winner prize for her project ‘Stereotype Threat’ which looked into the affect that stereotypes can have on student exam marks. She was presented with £200 and the opportunity to attend the
BA CREST Science Fair
, London, in February 2006.
'I am thrilled to have won the Young Scientist prize. I have had a great day here at the Young Innovators and I can’t wait to come to London next year to attend the BA CREST Science Fair,'
said Katherine Donnelly.
Ballycastle High School was the winner of the 15-16 year old category prize to attend the BA CREST Science Fair. Students Christopher Glass, Philip Christie, Judith Holmes and Kelly McNeill impressed the judges with their ability to make biodegradable plastic paint and glue from milk in their project ‘Milk Madness’.
Joining them at the BA Crest Science Fair next year will be the winners of the 11-14 category. This prize went to Emmet Kiberd and Andrew Linnie from Balbriggan Community College for their project entitled ‘Improving Computing Speeds Using Vedic Maths’ that demonstrated that an ancient mathematical model could be usefully applied to life in the 21st Century.
