The Branch was formed in the late 1980s. A major partnership was formed with Glaxo Wellcome (now Glaxo Smith Kline), enabling the Branch to put on two major events each year: Fun Science in Cumbria (a week-long hands-on event for younger pupils) and the Link Lecture for older school pupils. Over the years 18,000 children in one of the more remote parts of the country have therefore been able to take part in fun and educational activities. Recently the Branch has also begun organizing events for adult audiences, particularly through a relationship with the West Lakes Research Institute.
