About the East Midlands

This page contains background regional information and links to organisations providing science and engineering communications support across the East Midlands. It has the following sections:

Background

Only one other region employs more people in unskilled occupations than the East Midlands. It also has a higher proportion of people in semi-skilled and manual work occupations than the UK as a whole. Conversely, there are fewer people employed in professional and managerial occupations. The region relies quite heavily on manufacturing, employing 22% of the workforce compared to 15% across Britain. Financial Services however, are less important regionally than to Britain as a whole, with only 14.2% of the workforce represented as opposed to 19.6%.

Population

Centres of population in the region are as follows:
Derby 221,716
Derbyshire 741,500
Leicester 280,000
Leicestershire 611,200
Lincolnshire 634,300
Northamptonshire 600,000
Nottingham 266,995
Nottinghamshire 750,000
Rutland 37,000
Region 4,142,711

Key Clusters

emda want the East Midlands to be known across Europe for its extraordinary spirit of innovation, embodied by high achieving entrepreneurs and world-class businesses… So, emda has identified the region’s keys clusters – engineering, healthcare, food, creative industries and clothing and textiles.

Food Mall

Plans to build an £8 million specialist food mall in the East Midlands have moved a step forward with the launch of a search for the ideal site.
Dr Chris Brock, emda food and drink cluster manager, said: “We produce a wide variety of delicious food in the East Midlands. We want to provide a showcase for products with provenance that will appeal to shoppers and stimulate food producers to satisfy customers who are not entirely happy with the offering from existing retailers. This will be a permanent ‘food and drink festival’.”
Dr Brock continued: “The project delivers part of the Strategy for Sustainable Farming and Food, the Government’s plan to promote sustainable farming, and to reconnect food producers with consumers, recommended by the Curry report. It helps deal with the problems that producers face, which the market has failed to solve.”
Members of the lead project team for the Regional Food Mall are Chris Brock, food and drink cluster manager at emda, Nick Cheffins, of Peakhill Associates, Welton, near Lincoln, and Robert Danks, of Food Chain Solutions, Herefordshire.

Healthcare

emda has brought together the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University to work towards the establishment of a Bio-Medical Innovation Centre, Bio-City, in Nottingham. It will provide facilities for new and growing businesses and will be a unique resource for the region.

Creative Industries

emda is supporting EM-Media, a new regional agency set up by the Film Council to fund and encourage start-up media companies and work in partnership to launch the Bollywood film initiative.

Green's Mill

Green's Mill in Sneinton, Nottingham, was restored to full working order in 1985. In the mill yard is the George Green Science Centre: it incorporates a `hands-on' collection of exhibits featuring the properties of electricity, magnetism and light, a video presentation and display illustrating Green's life, mills and milling; it also has a seminar room.
The Mill was restored, on the initiative of the George Green Memorial Fund, as a memorial to Green by the City of Nottingham and is now one of its most successful museums. It is a fully working mill, grinding yearly some 20 tonnes of grain, and stone ground flour is on sale at the Mill. The miller is available for demonstrations and regularly takes parties through the mill. It is popular with schools, the general public and tourists; there are, on average, some 40,000 visitors a year. The Mill is a centre for craft workshops and displays and there are frequent bakery demonstrations.
