Team QinetiQ project information
External link to Team QinetiQ website
Team QinetiQ’s Ben Fogle and James Cracknell will be taking part in the first race to the Geographic South Pole since Scott and Amundsen's legendary duel nearly 100 years ago. The race covers over 400 miles across one of the harshest environments in the world and aims to start in December 2008. This is your chance to bring Team QinetiQ into your school.

In partnership with the BA, Team QinetiQ has developed a new CREST Bronze Award project. The project is to design a jacket for the cold environment of Antarctica and is in line with the KS3 curriculum.

The competition and self nomination form

If your Team QinetiQ CREST project successfully achieves a Bronze Award, you will be invited to complete a self nomination form and submit it and the project, to a panel of experts, who will assess and select projects to be showcased at The Big Bang: UK Young Scientists' and Engineers' Fair, London (4th - 6th March 2009). At the Fair, the panel will select a winner.

The school with the winning design will receive a visit by James Cracknell and Ben Fogle during National Science and Engineering Week in March 2009. The whole school can hear all about their experiences in the race and the design team can show their project to Ben and James.

To be eligible for the Team QinetiQ Competition:
- You must register your school with the Team QinetiQ Learning Zone.
- You must get started and register all participating students for their CREST Bronze Awards with the Local CREST Co-ordinator (registration will cost £4 per student) by Monday 15th December 2008. The students will have until Monday 19th January 2009 (please note: self nomination closes on this date) to work on their projects.
- Students must work in teams of 3-5 on the Wrap up Warm project.

The competition is open to all UK schools.

What do I need to do?

1. Register your school with the Team QinetiQ Learning Zone.

2. Contact your Local CREST Co-ordinator to register your students for the CREST Bronze Award by Monday 15th December 2008. Click here for contact details.

The Local CREST Co-ordinator will provide CREST Student Profile Forms which guide students through their project work.

3. Access the Wrap up Warm - design a jacket project idea (see link at the bottom of this web page). Plan how your students can go about completing the project.

4. Contact the Local CREST Co-ordinator when the students have successfully completed the Project.
Bronze CREST certificates will be awarded. The Local CREST Co-ordinator may ask to see a sample of the completed Profile Forms.

5. From Wednesday 26th November - Monday 19th January, you will have an opportunity to self nominate your teams and their project work for a place at the UK Young Scientists' and Engineers' Fair, London, 4th - 6th March 2009.
