Networking at the Science Communication Conference

A bursary scheme was arranged in 2008 to attract a wider range of delegates to the conference.

Awardees had their conference fees paid and were eligible for a contribution of up to £200 to assist with travel and accommodation expenses. The bursary also covered optional attendance at the conference dinner on Monday 19 May.

In 2008, 16 bursaries were funded by the Wellcome Trust. A further 13 bursaries were funded by the Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills.

Bursaries were awarded in the following categories:

UK science communication students
freelancers/microbusiness (less than 10 employees)
campaigning groups
scientists/engineers involved in public engagement

To be eligible for a Wellcome Trust-funded bursary, applicants had to show a substantial element of public engagement work in the biosciences or medical sciences.

Bursaries were also awarded based on how applicants intended to disseminate information from the conference to others in their field.
