The Royal Meteorological Society’s Climate Change Question Time (29 July 2008)

BA Festival of Science media release from the Royal Meteorological Society

For Immediate Release

The Royal Meteorological Society is organising a Climate Change Question Time on the evening of 9 September at the Quaker House in Liverpool city centre as part of this year’s BA Festival of Science.

The Festival is taking place at the University of Liverpool and across the city from 6-11 September, bringing over 350 of the UK’s top scientists and engineers to discuss the latest developments in science with the public.

The Climate Change Question Time event will bring together a public audience with a panel of experts in climate change science.  It will be an opportunity for the public to question the scientists directly on their work, and to ask the scientists their thoughts and views on a range of climate change topics.

Following this there will be an opportunity to meet with the scientists informally, and to see some entertaining weather and climate desk top demonstrations from the Society’s School Ambassadors.

Panel members will include, amongst others:

• Professor Sir Brian Hoskins, Director of the Gratham Institute for Climate Change and a newly appointed member of the Government’s Climate Change Committee;

• Dr Peter Stott, the Head of Climate Change Attribution and Understanding at the world renowned Met Office’s Hadley Centre, and a lead contributor to the IPCC’s Fourth Assessment Report;

• Professor Jo Haigh, Professor of Atmospheric Physics at Imperial College, whose area of expertise includes the Sun’s impact on our climate;

• Professor Piers Forster, the Roberts Research Fellow and Professor of Climate Physics at the University of Leeds, working in the field of climate forcing and feedbacks;

• and chairing the panel, Professor Paul Hardaker, Chief Executive of the Royal Meteorological Society (the UK’s professional and learned Society for Weather and Climate), who before taking on this role was the Met Office’s Chief Advisor to Government.

This year’s BA Festival of Science is organised by the BA (British Association for the Advancement of Science) in partnership with the University of Liverpool. It is supported by the Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills, the Liverpool Culture Company and the Northwest Regional Development Agency.
