South East Region Clubs Launch Event
05/04/2007
Hosted by Wrotham School, pupils had the opportunity to get involved in activities including the construction of a water turbine and the distillation of alcohol from fermentation. The alcohol produced by the pupils was then used to fuel a model vehicle, around a circuit in the grounds of the school. Toyota, were kind enough to bring along a Prius hybrid car, as a centerpiece at the launch, to re-emphasis the importance of renewable energy and the innovations taking place in energy usage in cars. The activities were followed by a quiz, with light buzzers, designed by the Technology Dept, especially for the event!
The launch involved over 45 pupils from Wrotham School, Barton Court Grammar School and Dartford Technology College. Other guests included University of Kent, the Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Chair of Governors for Wrotham School, the Science Learning Centre, SEEDA and the BA. Over 20 teachers and Heads, from most of the schools successful in receiving funding across the South East, also attended.
Ms Burleigh, Head Teacher of Dartford Technology College commented “It was a delight to see pupils from different schools undertaking scientific experiments with enjoyment, pleasure and enthusiasm. It was an excellent example of challenging pupils through problem solving activities, in an atmosphere of friendly competition. This was an excellent morning, showing the kinds of interactions that can happen, bringing schools from very different sub-regions, educational providers, industry and universities together.
