Amelia Lake - Biography
Dr Amelia Lake trained as a dietitian and practised in UK hospitals before becoming a full time researcher and public health nutritionist with the Human Nutrition Research Centre at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. She has participated in a number of public health and nutrition projects and the results of these have contributed to UK health policies over recent years. Currently she is working on LIFELAX – diet and lifestyle versus laxatives in the management of constipation in older people, a Health Technology Assessment funded trial.
Amelia's work as a nutritionist has taken on more relevance as Western society suffers an obesity epidemic, which is putting increasing pressure on health services. Educating the public about healthy eating has become increasingly important, and Amelia has done this through forums which include the media, public lectures and training sessions for professionals.
Amelia has extensive experience of working with non-specialist audiences as well as academics, and has produced various training programmes and related material. She is currently coaching GPs and nurses on behavioural change counselling techniques with regard to patients' eating and lifestyle habits.
Amelia is a registered expert with the Science Media Centre, British Dietetic Association and Newcastle University Press Office, and is regularly contacted by the media to give comments about topical health stories.
