National fair winner heads to Atlanta to represent the UK
Alex White receiving his Intel ISEF award from Mr Danny Arati, Intel Education Online Programme Manager
Alex White, from the King’s School in Chester, flew to the US this weekend to compete in what has been termed ‘the Olympics of science competitions’.

Alex is representing the UK's science hopes at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) after winning his place at the UK Young Scientists' and Engineers' Fair organised by the BA in March. At Intel ISEF, which is taking place from 11-16 May in Atlanta, Georgia, he will compete among over 1,500 of the world’s brightest young scientists and inventors for over $4 million in scholarships and awards. It is the world’s largest pre-college science competition and offers Alex the opportunity to mix with other talented youngsters from more than 40 nations across the globe, as well as the chance to gain inspiration from Nobel Laureates and other leading scientists and researchers.

At the Young Scientists’ and Engineers’ Fair, Alex was deemed the ‘clear winner’ of the prestigious Intel ISEF prize for his CREST Award project. Working at the University of Liverpool for four weeks over the summer under the supervision of Dr Andrew Fogg, Alex analysed the synthesis and catalytic properties of a novel group of materials that have the potential to be used as safer, more environmentally friendly catalysts in chemical reactions widely used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. Dr Fogg has since presented Alex’s research at a chemistry symposium in Mexico, which highlights the quality of his work.

Alex was very positive about his Nuffield Bursary-funded research experience, ‘It was a great opportunity to get into a lab and work alongside PhD students and take my skills beyond A-level. My project really confirmed to me that I want to pursue a career in chemical research.

To help prepare him for the huge event, two of the previous winners of the Intel ISEF prize (including Holly Batchelor who went on to have great success at the international competition last year), spoke to Alex about their experiences. ‘They told me what a hugely influential experience it had been in their lives,’ said Alex. ‘I’m really looking forward to it.

Roland Jackson, Chief Executive of the BA, said: ‘It’s an amazing achievement for Alex to reach this stage and opens the door to a host of new experiences and opportunities for him. Judges at the UK Young Scientists’ and Engineers’ Fair were very impressed by Alex’s research and we are sure he will do himself proud at Intel ISEF.

The BA would like to thank Intel for sponsoring the trip to the International Science and Engineering Fair, and AstraZeneca and Research Councils UK for their sponsorship of CREST.
