BA Branches go from strength to strength...

Over the course of the past twelve months, there has been an upsurge in the number and activity of many of the BA Branches.

Branches that were previously inactive are now not only showing new signs of life but are creating a whole range of engaging events programmes across the country.

Take Northumbria for example, up until the beginning of the year no events had been run for a number of months. Now, down to the hard work of new and existing Branch members, there has been a literal turn of events. One of the first events of their new programme was a field visit to the Dove Marine Laboratory in North Shields, Tyne and Wear, which attracted over 40 people and received great feedback from both Branch members and attendees alike.

Spurred on by their early success, the Branch is now forging on with their programme and has a number of talks and activities lined up on topics ranging from stem cells to water.

Simon Laing, a new member of the Northumbria Branch said: 'The events the branch have coordinated so far have had a real buzz about them and the programme for the future is really starting to take shape – it’s a really exciting time to be involved and I’m looking forward to seeing how things progress!'

But the Northumbria Branch is not alone in its new found success; other Branches across the country including Merseyside, West Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire are now all being spurred into action and are planning a whole range of exciting new events programmes with a wide range of partnerships.

And in Belfast a recent meeting to discuss whether there was enough interest to start a new Branch in Northern Ireland was attended by over 30 enthusiastic members of the science communication community, all extremely keen to capitalise on the networking and collaborations a BA Branch in the area could offer.

Joanna Rooke, Manager of Regions and Branches for the BA said: 'We are thrilled that the BA Branches have done so well over the past twelve months, not only to stage such a fantastic array of events but also to attract such a wide range of new members. It really shows the hard work and enthusiasm of the Branch members is paying off and we are totally committed to continuing to support the Branches to achieve these great results.'
