Fraud, suicide and the ultimate neighbour from hell – the BA Award Lectures
The Sun  - the ultimate neighbour from hell?
Identity theft, silent aircraft and cell suicide are amongst the topics which have scooped prestigious awards for science communication. The 2005 BA Award Lectures will be presented at the BA Festival of Science in Dublin this September. The awards are presented by the BA.

‘The BA Award Lectures are presented to outstanding younger communicators who bring science to life with passion whilst also tackling its impact on society,’ says Professor Helen Haste, Chair of the BA and one of the judges. ‘Each of the winners promises to deliver a fairly complex subject in an entertaining about their current  innovative work  whilst focusing on its relevance to our everyday lives.’

The winners are:

Charles Darwin Award Lecture
Professor Seamus Martin from the Department of Genetics, Trinity College Dublin
Cells suicide, execution and downright murder: prolonging life by understanding death’

Joseph Lister Award Lecture
Dr Emily Finch from the Norwich Law School, University of East Anglia
‘Life-Swapping in Cyber Suburbia: the problem of stolen identity and the Internet’

Isambard Kingdom Brunel Award Lecture
Dr Tom Reynolds from the Engineering Dept, University of Cambridge
‘The Future of Civil Aviation – The approach of the silent aircraft’

Lord Kelvin Lecture
Dr Robert Walsh from the Centre for Astrophysics, University of Central Lancashire
‘Living with a star: A new encounter with our dynamic Sun’

Charles Lyell Award Lecture
Dr Jason Hall-Spencer from the School of Biological Sciences, University of Plymouth
‘Ireland’s Hidden Depths’

The BA Festival of Science will take place in Dublin from 3-10 September, bringing over 300 of the UK and Ireland’s top scientists to discuss the latest developments in science with the public. In addition to talks and debates at Trinity College, there will be a host of events throughout the city as part of the Festival in the City programme.
