How will we use drugs in the future? What kind of drug use will society accept?

In January 2007, drugsfutures at the Dana Centre launched the drugsfutures project, an online debate and consultation about the future of drug use in our society.

The audience explored all the issues through forum theatre, where they were in charge of the characters and story.

At the centre of the tale is Tilda, a hard-working marketing executive suffering from stress. The consultant psychiatrist has prescribed her some pills but the potential side-effects are severe. Should she take the drugs?

Her friend Cressida is a nurse at the local hospital. She sees medicine working every day, but also thinks doctors are too quick to prescribe. What should she advise Tilda?

Tilda's colleague and flatmate Imogene doesn't avoid drugs, and thinks that the doctor knows best. Imogene's boyfriend Eric doesn't steer clear of drugs either, and says he could get her something that will really work...

Experts of all sorts were on hand to help the audience direct the characters, and the audience took every opportunity to share their opinions.

This event took place in January 2007 at the Dana Centre and launched the Academy of Medical Sciences' drugsfutures project. It was organised by the Science Museum, EDAB, the BA and the Academy of Medical Sciences.

In March 2007, the BA ran three drugsfutures workshops with community groups, including those who had previously taken part in the community x-change and the DISC project.
