Jobs at the BA
The BA Festival of Science Festival Assistants
The BA is looking for helpers to assist with the
BA Festival of Science
at the University of Liverpool and around the City from 5-11 September 2008. Volunteering to help at the Festival provides an excellent opportunity to take part in the UK’s longest-established science festival, which sees thousands of people participating in talks and discussions on the burning issues in science.
We are looking specifically for people to assist in the following areas:
Events Assistants
– Helping to ensure the Festival runs smoothly for all our speakers and visitors. Positions are varied, from supporting presenters and providing AV assistance, to working at the main Festival box office and directing audiences. Event Assistants need to be highly articulate and customer focused.
Young People’s Programme
– Thousands of students from ages 8-19 will be attending lively workshops, talks and interactive demonstrations. Volunteers will have a hands-on role within these and therefore need to be energetic, helpful, and have experience of working with young people.
Press Centre
– The Press Centre is attended by the top science correspondents from the UK and beyond. Work in the Press Centre can be high pressure, so initiative and a calm manner is essential, along with excellent interpersonal and computer skills.
All positions will be paid at a rate of £4.60 per hour for workers aged 18-21 and £5.52 per hour for workers aged 22 and over. Some work may involve working early morning or late evening and at the weekend.
Training will take place on 1 September, at the University, only those who are able to attend will be considered for the positions above.

Unpaid work experience positions
There are also opportunities for people particularly interested in Science Communication to work on one of the most popular elements of the programme, the
x-change
.
The x-change takes place in the early evening on Monday 10 – Thursday 13 September. Volunteers for the x-change will be required to visit events during the day, identifying exceptional presenters and the most interesting, controversial or unusual subjects of the day to take part in the discussion. Volunteers will also be responsible for event managing the x-changes as well as publicising each evening’s x-change. A genuine interest in science communication is essential as is the ability to work to tight deadlines. You must also feel comfortable in approaching presenters to invite them to take part in the x-change.
The x-change positions are offered on an expenses paid basis.
There will be a training day before the Festival week for the x-change volunteers to meet each other and go through their roles.
