Answer #1
Have you been diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome? If so, you probably have many questions about this condition, its causes, and its treatments. Read on to learn what you need to know about nephrotic syndrome.
Q. What is nephrotic syndrome?
A. In and of itself, nephrotic syndrome is not a disease. It is a set of symptoms related to dysfunction of the kidneys and is characterized by damage to certain filters in the kidneys called glomeruli that normally prevent necessary proteins from being filtered into the urine along with other body wastes. When the protein goes into the urine instead of into the bloodstream, the body is less able to soak up water from tissues throughout the body. Swelling results, usually in the stomach, legs, hands, and eyes. People with nephrotic syndrome also often have very high blood cholesterol levels.
Q. Is Nephrotic syndrome common?
A. Roughly two out of every 10,000 people have this condition. It is more common in men. Children usually show symptoms when they are between two and five years old.
Q. What treatments are available for nephrotic syndrome?
A. Homeopathic medicine has been found to have very promising results for people with nephrotic syndrome. Evidence suggests that this alternative approach can reduce the frequency and duration of nephrotic syndrome attacks, as well as lessening the frequency of colds and infections that often weaken the body even further. In addition, patients using a homeopathic regimen are often able to minimize their dependency on steroid medications such as prednisone and cyclosporine, both of which can have severe side effects. The overall goal of homeopathy is to strengthen and revitalize the immune system, a weakness in which is often the underlying cause of the syndrome.
Q. Are there any other cures or treatments for nephrotic syndrome?
A. Unfortunately, nephrotic syndrome is a chronic condition for which there is no cure. The purpose of treatment is to minimize the symptoms. This condition can also lead to complications such as blood clots, high cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, swelling, and inflammation. Commonly prescribed medications include but are not limited to those that lower blood pressure and cholesterol, water pills, blood thinners, immunosuppressant’s, and antibiotics.
Q. What should I remember when I see my doctor about my nephrotic syndrome symptoms?
A. The most important thing to always keep in mind whenever you talk to any doctor about your symptoms or treatments is that no question is stupid, and you have the right to keep asking for clarification until you feel completely comfortable. If you are given medications, inquire about any side effects and/or warning signs you need to watch for. Finally, if you have nagging doubts about your condition or the way you are being treated, don’t hesitate to find a different doctor. There is no better advocate than a patient happy with his or her doctor and knowledgeable about symptoms and interventions.
